The Apocalypse Tapestry of Darlinghurst

The Apocalypse Tapestry of Darlinghurst by Lark is an immersive large scale painting installation that speaks to middle-ages religious imagery within a contemporary context and brings in to question notions of identity, connection to place, survival, ‘damnation’ and the enduring human spirit.

Investigating ideas around the apocalypse and redemption and our rapidly changing status as a human race, TATOD reflects on local issues such as Darlinghurst’s shift as an artistic and queer neighbourhood and Sydney’s demising social housing in Redfern, Waterloo and the Rocks.

The Apocalypse Tapestry of Darlinghurst is a reference to the 14th Century French tapestry- The Apocalypse Tapestry of Angers, which the artist recently visited. A depiction of the apocalypse and redemption is shown through lush weaving in an incredible 103 metre tapestry. The tapestry was revered but eventually ended up in a religious depository and used as scraps to rub down horses or wipe feet on. It was later restored and exhibited where it rests today in Angers.

This is the first of a series of investigations around these themes for Lark.

"The striking atmospheric qualities, the delicate fields of layered, coloured wash recall the "falling worlds" of Chinese scroll painting. Paradoxically, there is also an ominous claustrophobia here with forms that appear trapped within the miasma. Larks works suggest narratives that are central to colonising cultures for example being lost in the unmapped primal wilderness, or questions of origin and ultimate sustainability. Ultimately, the insistent polyvalent mysteriousness echoes a vast swathe of Romantic antecedents and cultural forms that oscillate across the pre historic, the Indigenous and the first worlds."
